Iryna Pap is vastly underrepresented in the history of Ukrainian photography. Her work—accessible in the form of her archives for Izvestia—was saved in 1991 in Kyiv and deposited at the Fotohof Archiv in Salzburg, Austria, in 2021. Often described as Soviet, and therefore accused of ideological, her work was dismissed early on by researchers. With a fresh look, this article seeks to approach Pap’s photographic practice through different series taken between 1959 and 1964, and to historicize it by juxtaposing the pictures with the historical events of that time.
