In the 18th century, French architects and engineers travelled to the territories of present-day Ukraine, Poland, and Lithuania. By tracing their journeys and their interactions in these territories, this article analyzes the reasons that drove these architects to undertake these journeys and uncovers the alternative career models that such sojourns allowed. Emigration thus appears not only as an opportunity for artistic development but also as a strategic choice with political implications.

Ukrainian Baroque

This article interrogates the notion of Baroque, and then the developments of a “Neobaroque” style in the politically charged context of defining a Ukrainian “national identity.” In light of the developments advanced by postcolonial studies devoted to the Latin American Baroque, the authors propose defining Ukrainian Baroque as part of the art historiographic narrative as well as an ideological construction.

From the beginning of its history, Kyiv has been marked by cultural exchanges with Byzantium, Constantinople, and the West. The story of its Christianization at the end of the 10th century, after the conversion of Vladimir, then of his entire people, is delivered to us by the Chronicle of Nestor, compiled in the early 11th century. Based on various textual and material sources, this article reviews the construction of the first Christian buildings in Kyiv, from the 10th century, the most emblematic of which are the Dessiatinnaia church and Saint Sophia Cathedral.

The years following the end of the Second World War saw an increase in the number of competitions for the reconstruction of the Soviet Union’s destroyed cities. In Kyiv, a city badly damaged by the fighting, this reconstruction was the object of a competition with a strongly ideological dimension, with the central power taking care to prevent any embodiment of a Ukrainian specificity in the construction projects. This article examines this intertwining of historical, aesthetic, and political questions.
