Out of the Studio: Photographers and Mobile Studios

« Hors les murs. Photographes et studios mobiles » est le deuxième numéro de la revue Photographica. Centré autour d’un dossier thématique, il aborde l’histoire des photographes ambulants et de leurs pratiques, ainsi que du matériel lié à ces circulations, aux XIXe et XXe siècles. Si les ateliers et studios sédentaires ont fait l’objet de recherches historiques et d’expositions, la mobilité des photographes professionnels hors du studio a été moins explorée. À travers cinq articles de fond, ce numéro propose plusieurs études qui font émerger une histoire matérielle et visuelle des opérateurs itinérants : on y trouvera ainsi un essai sur les photographes allemands en Suède dans les années 1840-1850, l’étude d’une femme photographe itinérante dans la France du XIXe siècle, une réflexion sur le matériel photographique des explorateurs, un texte sur les photographes parisiens du dehors, ou encore un article sur la querelle des photo-filmeurs dans l’après-guerre. Éclairages complémentaires, la rubrique « source » traite ici des brevets d’inventeurs liés à la photographie portative, tandis qu’un entretien avec le cinéaste Hu Wei vient creuser la contemporanéité de ces pratiques. En varia, on pourra suivre l’histoire d’un modèle photographié par Man Ray et Picasso, et dont l’histoire est aujourd’hui redécouverte.

“Out of the Studio: Photographers and Mobile Studios” is the second issue of the journal Photographica. Centered around a thematic dossier, it deals with the history of itinerant photographers and their practices, as well as with the equipment linked to these circulations, in the 19th and 20th centuries. While sedentary studios have been the subject of historical research and exhibitions, the mobility of professional photographers outside the studio has been less explored. Through five in-depth articles, this issue proposes several studies that bring to light a material and visual history of itinerant operators: an essay on German photographers in Sweden in the 1840s and 1850s, a study of a female itinerant photographer in nineteenth-century France, a reflection on the photographic equipment of explorers, a text on Parisian photographers outside the studio, and an article on tensions and conflicts surrounding “photo-filmeurs” in the postwar era. In addition, the “source” section deals with inventors’ patents related to portable photography, while an interview with the filmmaker Hu Wei explores the contemporary nature of these practices. In the Varia rubric, we follow the story of a model photographed by Man Ray and Picasso, named Adrienne Fidelin, whose role and trajectory is now being rediscovered.
